The Ottawa legal community is mourning the loss of Giselle Alexander, a family lawyer whose professionalism, intelligence, and genuine care for others earned her the respect of colleagues and clients alike. Her passing on June 9, 2026, has left many reflecting on a promising career and a life devoted to helping people through some of their most difficult moments.
Giselle built her legal career around family law, an area that demands not only legal knowledge but also empathy and patience. Those who worked with her often spoke of her ability to remain calm and focused during emotionally charged situations, guiding clients with honesty and practical advice when they needed it most.
A graduate of the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Law, Giselle distinguished herself early in her legal studies. She was recognized for her advocacy and negotiation skills, earning top honors in competitive family law and negotiation events. Her success in these competitions reflected the qualities that would later define her legal practice—careful preparation, strong communication skills, and a thoughtful approach to problem-solving.
Before entering law, Giselle completed a Bachelor of Commerce degree at the University of Guelph. Her background in business and finance gave her valuable insight into the financial aspects of family law matters, allowing her to provide well-rounded guidance to her clients.
After joining RPB Family Law as a summer student, she completed her articles with the firm and eventually became an associate lawyer. Colleagues remember her as someone who worked hard, supported those around her, and approached every case with professionalism and integrity. She was deeply committed to helping families find practical solutions while remaining a strong advocate when litigation became necessary.
Outside the office, Giselle embraced life with the same energy she brought to her work. She enjoyed training in Muay Thai, participating in her book club, and spending weekends exploring local markets and community events. Friends describe her as bright, determined, and approachable, someone who could move seamlessly from a serious legal discussion to a warm conversation over coffee.
Her death is a significant loss for Ottawa’s legal community and for the many people whose lives she influenced throughout her career. Although her time was far too short, Giselle’s professionalism, kindness, and dedication to helping others will remain part of the legacy she leaves behind.
She will be greatly missed by her family, friends, colleagues, former classmates, and clients, all of whom were fortunate to know her.
